This flower crown is absolutely stunning and it is easy as pie to make. When you next need a beautiful headpiece, make it your self and make it exactly how you want. Customise it to perfection.
What you need:
- Crepe Paper (various colours)
- Craft wire
- Hot Glue Gun
- Toilet Paper Roll
- Sticky Tape
- Skewer or something sharp and pointy to make a whole through the paper
How to make the crown base:
Take your craft wire and measure it around your head where you would like the flower crown to sit. Make sure you allow a little bit of extra wire so that you will have enough to twist it together to secure the crown at the end.
Cut a piece of crepe paper (the colour that you will use for the leaves). I used green. Make sure the crepe paper is almost the entire length of the wire, if it is not, use two pieces. It doesn’t really matter how thick the crepe paper is, it just needs to be able to cover up the wire, perhaps an inch or two thick.
Lay the crepe paper flat and with your hot glue gun, glue the wire to the crepe paper. Then glue the paper together at the top so that the wire is completely covered. Well done! This is now your canvas to work upon.
How to Make the Flowers:
It depends on how small or large your head is, but you will need in total approximately 16 to 18 flowers.
For the stems:
Take the toilet paper roll and cut it into strips measuring approximately 0.75 cm. These will be the stems of the flowers. Make sure you have at least 16 strips.
Flower type one (Make 12):
Cut a piece of crepe paper measuring approximately 1 – 2 inches. I wouldn’t recommend going any larger or smaller than this as it becomes difficult to work with. Fold the paper into equal sections measuring approximately 2 inches. Then cut two hill shapes into the top of the paper.
Then, take a strip of cardboard toilet roll, fold it in half and glue it together at the top. Then glue the cardboard to the start of the crepe paper strip. Wrap the paper around the cardboard two or three times, then start bunching up the paper at the bottom as you are wrapping. Take your hot glue gun and glue the part that is bunched up to the cardboard strip. You should start to see the flower shape forming. Do this until you run out of paper strip. Once completed, secure this with a thin piece of sticky tape. Wa-lah! One flower is complete! Repeat 11 more times, but mix up the colours of the flowers so you have an approximately even number of each.
Flower type two (Make 4):
This flower type is a little more time consuming, so I made about 4 or these in total. It’s up to you what you want to do, if you want to make the whole crown with these flowers, feel free.
Find something you can use to measure a circle. I used my tape roll, but I did consider using a jar of vegemite. Cut another strip of crepe paper, but make it wide enough that the circular object will fit on it. Fold the paper into equal sections so you form a square shape, again make sure it is high enough so that the circular object will fit.
Place your circular object on the crepe paper and measure around it, marking the circle with your pen. Cut the circle out. You should get several circles out of this. You can make a flower out of only one colour or several. I wanted a pop of yellow colour contrasting against a really bright pink. So, I used 3 circles of light pink, two circles of bright pink, and a smaller yellow circle.
Take the light pink circles and one bright pink and cut small dips around the edges. On the other bright pink and the yellow circle cut long triangles into the sides, so it kind of ends up looking like a sea anemone.
Then place all the circles on top of each other in the colour order that you prefer. Make sure the two sea anemone circles are on top, with the smallest being on the very top.
Take your sharp object (skewer) and force a whole through the middle. Take one of the toilet paper roll cardboard strips, fold it in half and cut the tops into points. Then push this through the hole created by the skewer. Then fold the sides of the cardboard down as if this were a split pin and glue them to the paper. Cover up the cardboard with a small piece of crepe paper.
On each layer of paper insert some glue near to the stem and press the sides of the paper together (approximately 3 times). This should start to form the paper into a flower shape. Please be careful with the hot glue gun while doing this. Once finished secure the paper with a thin piece of tape by wrapping it around the stem. Repeat this 3 more times, but get creative here and mix up the colour combinations of these flowers.
Add the flowers to the crown:
Adding the leaves:
Take a piece of crepe paper that you want to use for the leaves and begin cutting really rough leaf shapes out. Don’t worry too much about perfection here, the crown will look effective regardless. Once you have a pile of leaves, begin gluing them over the top of the wire and the stems. Make sure all the stems are covered. Do this on both sides of the crown.
So that you don’t inure yourself on the wire, fold the ends of the wire into circles. If you have pliers that would be best to use, or shape it with your hands. Then take the hot glue gun and put some glue over the circles you just made. Secure the crown to your head by twisting the wire together. Annnnnd.. your done! That was easy! Now go and flaunt your fabulous headwear!
Don’t forget to make a matching one for your kitty cat too. If you do want to do this, just make everything on a smaller scale, including the stems of the flowers, that way you can make the flower petals smaller if you want.
